Thomas Weibel

Dr. Thomas Weibel advises and represents clients in complex commercial disputes before state courts and arbitral tribunals.

He has a wealth of experience in complex national and transnational commercial disputes, with a particular focus on the financial industry, aviation, and shareholder disputes. In addition, he specialises in high-profile and bet-the-company disputes, internal investigations, private client litigation, fraud cases (including asset freezing), recognition and enforcement of judgments and awards, and injunctive relief. He also regularly sits as expert for Swiss law in high-stake disputes before foreign courts and arbitral tribunals, including cross-examination as Part 35 Expert under the UK CPR.

Thomas Weibel is admitted to the bar in Basel and holds degrees from the Universities of Basel (lic. iur., 1997; PhD, 2001, summa cum laude, awarded the Professor Walther Hug prize for outstanding PhD Theses in law) and Canterbury (LL.M. in International Commercial Law, 2004, with distinction).

Prior to joining VISCHER, Thomas worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers (formerly STG-Coopers & Lybrand), F. Hoffmann La Roche, and with the District Court of Liestal. He joined VISCHER in 2001, became a partner in 2011, and has assumed the role as co-head of VISCHER's Dispute Resolution practice group in 2016.

Thomas very actively publishes and lectures on national and international civil procedure law as well as Swiss inheritance law. He is the co-editor of the leading inheritance law commentary (Praxiskommentar Erbrecht) and of the Basel Commentary on the Lugano Convention. In addition, he has been serving for many years as editor in chief for civil procedure law for a periodical on Swiss case law (ius.focus).
Thomas is a fellow of the International Academy of Financial Crime Litigators and active in a number of professional associations, such as Cambridge Forums or the International Bar Association (IBA).

He has been listed in his key practice areas in all major directories (Chambers & Partners, Legal 500, Who's Who Legal, Best Lawyers, and Leaders League) for many years. He was awarded Lawyer of the Year for Dispute Resolution several times, among which by the German Handelsblatt in 2018.

Thomas speaks German, English, and French fluently and has working abilities in both Italian and Spanish.
